EMILY JONES

Cyclical Femininity was my BFA graduate exhibition. I collect bread tags. I use the bread tag as a vehicle for the idea of misogyny ('Women belong in the kitchen', 'make me a sandwich'), and I place it in images of the eye to represent internalized misogyny.

"I Have So Many Things to Say, And Now That I've Left I Can Finally Say Them", 2023. A constellation of thoughts and words I only have the strength to say through thread.

"My Ass Stares Back", 2023. Embroidery thread, found pants

This piece is about the sexualization of women daily in everyday situations. Even in seemingly masculine places or during 'masculine' activities, like working on a car or buying hardware, women are not taken seriously, and minimized to what they look like.

"Web of Misogyny" 2023. Thread, cyanotype on filter paper, found metal hoop

The discoloration functions as a visual representation of misogyny as a virus, spreading and infecting others and their behavior.

"Don't Look at Me Like Another Lost Soul", 2023. Mirror, ceramic, T-pins, embroidery thread

This piece is about my religious journey. The steps up the side are the path of stability that slowly becomes more and more precarious the further from the ground they get. The T-pins and thread create a railing that also disappears. The separate post represents me on my own now, with only a cracked bridge to keep me connected to the past. The inside of this sculpture has a bunch of eyes, and underneath are mirrored panels. If you look in, you not only see yourself, you also see a bunch of eyes looking back at you, with judgement.
